AUSTIN, Texas — One of the most watched runoff races this cycle is the fight for Congressional District 30 in Dallas. In particular, people are monitoring the Democratic primary to replace retiring Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Dallas.
The safe, blue district saw a huge primary field, with two candidates advancing to the May runoff. Johnson endorsed freshman state representative Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas.
Crockett is a civil rights lawyer who represents parts of Dallas in the Texas House. While only serving one term, she quickly made a name for herself, filing more bills than any other freshman on things like police reform, drug laws and voting rights.
“While I am so thankful to have the support of the outgoing congresswoman, I think more important is the reason she endorsed me,” said Crockett during an interview on Capital Tonight. “I stood out as a freshman lawmaker, because of the work I did and my overall commitment to the people themselves.”
Crockett fell just short of the 50% threshold, receiving about 48% of the vote. Her opponent, Jane Hope Hamilton, came in second at 17%.
“We won the clear plurality of the vote, and that’s what I’m most excited about,” said Crockett. “The people’s support of my candidacy.”
Crockett says she has several top priorities if she’s elected to Congress, but her number one focus would be the economy.
“We need to strengthen our economy, especially in District 30. We have room to grow,” she said. “We have got to get inflation under control.”
The Republican primary race is also headed to a runoff, where James Harris will face James Rodgers. Election day is May 24.
