WACO, Texas — A fire in July displaced hundreds of students from G.W. Carver Middle School.

Waco ISD officials hope voters will approve issuing $355 million in bonds to help fund construction of a new campus and others.

Tyler should be at G.W. Carver Middle School right now. It's the school he fell in love with last year.

"I had my like own little space. We had like bigger rooms, more room in the hallways. This year is like crowded," said Tyler.

The seventh grader is one of more than 400 Waco ISD students who had to shift to Indian Spring Middle School this year after the fire damage.

Tyler's mom, Mandy Hansen, says it was a devastating loss.

"He would've loved being there again… He helped on the football team this year... he's playing for Carver," Hansen shared.

"I think the kids need just a bigger school [and] bigger space to express their own selves, instead of bumping into how many kids are at two schools combined," Hansen said.

Kyle DeBeer is chief of staff for the district. He says the district will rebuild.

"Obviously, we didn't plan on bringing the two campuses together this soon or housing both of them at Indian Spring Middle School, but the long term plan was for those campuses to come together when we open a new larger G.W. Carver Middle School," said DeBeer.

"On November 2, voters in Waco ISD are going to consider whether or not the district can issue $355 million in bonds. Those funds would be used to pay for the construction of four new schools and the renovation of a fifth. They would obviously pay for a new G.W. Carver Middle School," DeBeer explained.

Hansen believes it is what's best for the kids.

"I have heard about it. I'm excited about it. I'm ready for their school to be rebuilt" Hansen said.
