SAN ANTONIO — It’s a major understatement to say Rudy Campos Jr. loves sports.

“It’s the WWE-type thing for me when they said the boyhood dream becomes a reality when Shawn Michaels won the title,” Campos said. “And it’s like me, the boyhood dream. I’ve always thought what it be like to talk about sports 24/7.”

What You Need To Know

  • The FDA on Aug. 23 granted full approval to the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer

  • Rudy Campos Jr., a radio and podcast host, was hesitant to get vaccinated because he feared his Type 2 diabetes could cause complications

  • Campos got into better shape, and with the full approval granted to Pfizer by the FDA, has now chosen to be vaccinated

  • About 55% of people in Bexar County, Texas, are now vaccinated

That boyhood dream became a reality as Campos has hosted radio shows and is a member of Project Spurs, an independent Spurs blog and podcast. But a major priority in Campos’ life is not sports — it’s his family and health.

“I caught COVID last November and I lost a few pounds because of that right there. I went to the doctor this past February,” Campos said. “The doctor said I was a Type 2 diabetic, my A1C was 12.7, which is really, really, high.”

Those health complications are the reason why Campos didn’t want to take the vaccine — he says he wanted to get his health in check first. So he lost over 130 pounds from his original weight, and now his glucose is good, his cholesterol is good and his diabetes in remission.

“I wanted to make sure if I got the vaccine, I wouldn’t have complications because of diabetes, or cholesterol or heart disease or something,” Campos said. “Now that I know I’m in better shape it made me feel a lot better to get the vaccine.”

Campos was provided some more comfort recently now that the FDA has fully approved of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

“It’s almost like you don’t need that stamp or the guarantee of it,” Campos said. “It just makes you feel a little bit better now that you got the [Food and Drug Administration} behind it.”

Recent data showed that 55% of folks in Bexar County are fully vaccinated. That’s a little over a million people. Now that the Pfizer vaccine is fully approved by the FDA, the Campos family is going to join the other San Antonians who are fully vaccinated.

“We are all for it now, the outlook for it now is very promising. More than anything, man, is that our daughter is well, not just us,” Campos said.
