TEXAS — According to the Associated Press, Republican Tony Gonzales is projected to win the race for Texas’ 23rd Congressional District.

Texas’ 23rd Congressional District stretches across a large portion of the southwestern part of the state and is a majority Hispanic district.

Gonzales, a Republican, is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1999 to 2019 and working as a cryptologist. He’s a graduate of American Public University and Georgetown University.

Gonzales identifies as pro-life and is focused on issues including national security, Second Amendment rights, border security, and veterans. He is in favor of dismantling the Affordable Care Act.

Born in Virginia and raised in San Antonio, Texas, following college, Gina Ortiz Jones, a Democrat, enlisted in the Air Force as an intelligence officer and served in Iraq. She later moved to the Executive Office of the President.

In 2017, Jones relocated back to San Antonio in order to run for Congress. She was narrowly defeated in 2018 by Republican incumbent Will Hurd.

Jones has focused on health care reform, LGBTQ+ rights, national security, education, and veterans, among other issues.
