SAN ANTONIO -- A new international academy has opened its doors in San Antonio.

  • School serves Kindergarten through fifth grade
  • Only 3 schools in U.S. using specific global curriculum
  • All teachers are bilingual

There are only three schools in the entire country using the specific global curriculum that students will be learning. The school is open for students in Kindergarten through the fifth grade. Classes are so small right now that only three students named George, Kush, and Callie, are enrolled.

The new International Academy of San Antonio brings some different things to the table.

"As an international school we have some things that make it really unique. So first of all we are part of an international collaborative, which allows us to offer an international curriculum which means that we're connected to schools from all over the world," said Director of Curriculum Danielle Wierzbicki.

The connection is something parents can get behind.

"I see how in a lot of careers now you do need to get along with others from all over, you know other countries, other cultures." -- Sandra Torres-Cone, parent.

Students learn all the basics like math and reading, but the testing is not what you typically see either.

"I love the 21st Century skills and she'll be able to solve problems on her own, and another good thing is they don't have the STAAR test here because it's a private school," said parent Norma Duran.

All teachers are bilingual and learning about sustainability and global issues are a main focus at a student's pace.

"The other thing that was really important to us is the whole idea of this inquiry based learning system where he gets to ask questions and learn about what he's interested in and through that he's going to cover all the aspects of things he needs to know to be successful so we're really excited about it," said parent Andrew Marks.
