AUSTIN, Texas -- A Texas veterans advocacy group is pushing to reform property tax exemptions for disabled veterans during the 86th legislative session.

But the issue, among many others, could be overshadowed by larger debates on property tax relief and the years-long battle to overhaul the state’s school finance system.

Jim Brennan, Legislative Director for the Texas Coalition of Veterans Organizations, says the property tax exemption for veterans has not been adjusted since 1992.

“We had issues related to this over the last few sessions and we were unsuccessful in getting the bill through,” Brennan said. “We now know we’re going to have to watch and see what leadership says what property tax relief is going to look like and whether we will become part of that overall solution.”
