AUSTIN, Texas -- The Puerto Rican Cultural Center hosted its Octavitas celebration in East Austin.
Puerto Ricans celebrate Octavitas as the conclusion to the holidays.
Organizers of the event feel the celebration helps educate the public on their culture and share it with others.
"Our mission here it's more important than ever to maintain the culture, not only for our children. But to share it with the community, so everyone is welcome to participate so everyone can understand who were are,” said Dr. Ana Maria Tekina-eiru' Maynard.
Visitors brought gifts for the kids. An award was presented to someone who's made significant contributions to the center.
