SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Animal Care Services was able to track the origin of the mysterious tattoo on the ear of a malnourished Belgian Malinois they recently rescued from a home on San Antonio's southeast side.

The dog they thought was named Lady is actually named Elta. Animal Care Services said Lady was taken away from a home on Espinoza Street last week. Along with being emaciated and suffering from hair loss, the letters BHKEDE are tattooed inside her.

By tracking tattoo, it was discovered she's from a small town outside of Brussels, Belgium. However, they still don't know her story or how she got to San Antonio.

These dogs are typically used by military or law enforcement, but ACS investigators have not found any record of her training through Lackland AFB or the TSA database.

This is not the first time Elta has been to ACS in San Antonio.

"We have knowledge of how she was before so I can tell you we know she was not in this state. So there is an open investigation," said Joel Skidmore, an ACS investigator. "There is an open animal cruelty investigation."
