The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Saturday identified a deputy involved in a chase that ended with the death of a suspect.

Deputy Jack Danford has been with the office since 2005. He has been placed on administrative assignment.

It was originally stated that deputies on Thursday shot and killed 39-year-old suspect Alva Gwinn. However, on Friday the Killeen Department of Public Safety reported Gwinn died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Williamson County sheriff’s deputies on Thursday attempted a welfare check at Gwinn’s home, located west of Florence. Gwinn fled from deputies, and a chase ensued.

Gwinn’s vehicle became disabled during the chase and ended up on private property located near Texas State Highway 195 and Mountain Creek Road, 15 miles from Killeen.

Deputies said Gwinn pulled a gun on them, prompting them to open fire. However, it is believed Gwinn took his own life during the exchange.

Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
