SAN ANTONIO -- Texas health officials are getting some help from the military to control a mosquito problem.
Flood water brought in by Harvey left ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes all across affected areas.
Since Sept. 8, military aircraft have sprayed more than 1 million acres, mostly east of Houston. Health officials say the chemical they spray is safe for humans and pets, but deadly for mosquitos, even in tiny amounts.
"We spray less than an ounce and acre. So the analogy is that the equivalent of less than a shot glass for a football field,” said Lt. Bart Elsea, Mission Commander.
There haven't been any reports of viruses in the affected areas.
Officials want to control the mosquitoes because they're not only a nuisance, but can interfere with recovery efforts.
