Good morning, Texas. Here's what you need to know today.

Your Weather Planner

Happy Monday! We’ll have near record-breaking temperatures over the next few days, so get ready for some warm afternoons. Expect plenty of sunshine, with highs in the upper 80s today. Tuesday will feature sunny skies with highs in the low 90s. Thankfully, winds over the next few days will be steady, ranging from 5-15 mph — not excessive enough to further enhance the fire threat. It’s a great idea to practice fire safety and avoid burning, as we’ll be quite toasty for much of the week. Our next chance of rain moves in late Wednesday into Thursday, with increasing confidence that several inches of beneficial rainfall will occur with this system. However, we’ll also need to watch out for flooding. Stay tuned!

1. Agriculture secretary pledges relief to South Texas farmers amid water shortage

The new Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins returned to her home state of Texas to meet with farmers affected by severe water shortages and announce hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to help them. Texas Republicans pin the problem on Mexico failing to meet its obligations to provide water to the U.S. under a treaty.

This week, the Department of Agriculture announced it was expediting $10 billion in aid to farmers facing higher costs and reduced crop prices. About $280 million of that, Rollins said, will be provided to South Texas farmers.

2. Texas fires coach Rodney Terry after Longhorns make another quick exit from NCAA Tournament

Texas has officially fired Longhorns men’s basketball coach Rodney Terry after three seasons.

The move comes two years after Terry led Texas to the Elite Eight in the 2022-2023 season when, as an assistant coach, he took over the program at midseason after then-coach Chris Beard was arrested on a felony family violence charge and was fired. The charge against Beard was later dismissed.

3. A new museum in Texas tells the life stories of Medal of Honor recipients

A new museum devoted to telling the stories of those who have received the nation's highest military honor is opening this coming week in Texas.

The National Medal of Honor Museum is set to open Tuesday in Arlington, just west of Dallas. It highlights the lives and service of Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War to the global war on terrorism. Over 3,500 people have received the Medal of Honor, which is awarded by Congress for risking one's life in combat beyond the call of duty.
