1. A Texas GOP brawl is dragging to a runoff. How the power struggle may push Republicans farther right
A Republican power struggle in Texas that could push the state even farther right come November isn't cooling down.
The brawl within the Texas Republican primary this week was fought over personal and political reasons and left insurgent challengers emboldened that more victories are to come. With more than a dozen incumbents defeated or forced into uncomfortable runoffs, the results could reshape the Legislature and have already altered a top state appeals court.
2. Uvalde City Council to release investigation of the police response to 2022 school massacre
Nearly two years after the deadly school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 children and two teachers dead, the city council will discuss the results of an independent investigation it requested into the response by local police officers.
The report is one of multiple investigations into the deadly school massacre after Texas lawmakers found in 2022 that nearly 400 officers rushed to the scene but waited for over an hour before confronting the gunman. It follows a report by the Department of Justice earlier this year that criticized the “cascading failures” of responding law enforcement personnel from more than 20 local, state and federal agencies.
3. White House's State of the Union guests represent Biden's priorities
First lady Jill Biden has announced her list of invited guests to Thursday’s State of the Union address, offering to share her viewing box with 20 people the White House feels "personify issues or themes" that President Joe Biden will touch on in his speech.
Many of the White House’s guests represent several themes from Biden’s presidency, including his interests in cancer treatments, solutions to gun violence, civil rights, prescription drug pricing, student loan forgiveness and workforce development.
Guests include Kate Cox of Dallas, who was denied an emergency abortion by the state of Texas, and Jazmin Cazares of Uvalde, sister of Jackie Cazares, who was killed in the Robb Elementary massacre on May 24, 2022.
