Around Texas

1. Gov. Greg Abbott officially declares ‘invasion’ at Texas-Mexico border

Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday declared an “invasion” at the Texas-Mexico border because of the number of illegal migrant crossings. He has sent more officers to the border to prevent crossings into Texas.

The legal battle between the Biden administration and Abbott continues over whether the buoys are illegal and harmful to people. Abbott holds on to the belief that Biden has not helped to secure the border, leaving Texas to fend for itself.

2. Some crossings on U.S.-Mexico border still shut as cities, agents confront rise in migrant arrivals

The week began in Eagle Pass with rumors that large crowds of migrants might show up. On Friday, the small Texas border city was scrambling: nearly 9,000 asylum-seekers and counting had crossed from Mexico, an international bridge remained closed and a 3-year-old boy had drowned in the Rio Grande.

“Before we would hear rumors, nothing happened,” Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber said. “But this time something happened.”

The unfolding response in Eagle Pass, where the mayor declared a state of emergency, illustrates how Border Patrol agents have become overwhelmed in recent days by asylum-seekers on parts of the U.S. border with Mexico. In San Diego and El Paso, Texas, officials this week also closed border crossings so agents could help with the influx.

3. Arlington teen sentenced to 40 years after killing a student and injuring another in school shooting

A 16-year-old who opened fire at a Dallas-area school earlier this year, killing one student and injuring another, was sentenced Thursday to 40 years in prison for capital murder and attempted capital murder, prosecutors said.

The teen, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, had admitted to being the shooter and asked a jury to determine his sentence, the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office said in a news release. Since he's a minor, prosecutors withheld the teen's name.
