Today's Big Stories
1. Texas Education Agency replaces South San Antonio ISD’s superintendent, school board
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) appointed a new superintendent, Dr. Saul Hinojosa, and replaced the seven-member board of managers of the South San Antonio Independent School District on Wednesday.
Following almost 20 years of administrative issues, TEA said the appointments aim to address poor student results, weak financial management and public distrust, all of which triggered multiple investigations by the agency.
2. Latinos respond to DEI scale-backs, mass deportations with a national spending freeze
After President Donald Trump scaled back federal diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and as he continues to carry out mass deportations, Latinos in the U.S. are marching in streets and state capitals — even shutting down a major highway — to reject the moves.
Now, they’re protesting with their wallets.
The Latino Freeze Movement is a nationwide spending boycott, specifically targeting companies who have scaled back their policies on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
3. USDA works to reverse firings of bird flu staff
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday it is working to reverse the recent firings of some staff who were let go last weekend as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to cull the federal workforce and cut costs.
The firings took place amid growing concerns about bird flu affecting farms in multiple states, causing egg prices to skyrocket.
4. Chance of asteroid striking Earth in 2032 increases to 3.1%
The chances of Asteroid 2024 YR4 striking the Earth have increased, according to NASA.
The odds of impact are 3.1%, up from 1.3% two weeks ago, stated NASA. The size of it is between 131 feet to 295 feet or a little less than the Statue of Liberty’s height.
According to Dr. Andy Rivkin of the NASA’s DART investigation team, an asteroid that size would cause significant damage if it crashed into a city.
