Today's Big Stories

1. Travis County DA José Garza faces removal under new Texas law

After winning the March primary election in a landslide, Travis County District Attorney José Garza is the target of a removal campaign under a new Texas law that would decrease the powers elected prosecutors can exercise in their jurisdiction.

Travis County resident Mary Dupuis filed a petition to oust Garza from office on April 8. According to the petition, which is moving forward, Dupuis “seeks to remove Defendant from his public office due to incompetency and official misconduct.”

2. Supreme Court agrees to take up challenge to Biden's 'ghost gun' regulation

The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to take up a Biden administration appeal over the regulation of difficult-to-trace ghost guns, which had been struck down by lower courts.

The justices by a 5-4 vote had previously intervened to keep the regulation in effect during the legal fight. Ghost guns, which lack serial numbers, have been turning up at crime scenes with increasing regularity. The Justice Department had told the court that local law enforcement agencies seized more than 19,000 ghost guns at crime scenes in 2021, a more than tenfold increase in just five years.

3. Tesla cuts the price of its 'Full Self Driving' system by a third to $8,000

Tesla knocked roughly a third off the price of its “Full Self Driving” system — which can’t drive itself and so drivers must remain alert and be ready to intervene — to $8,000 from $12,000, according to the company website.

The cuts, which occurred on Saturday, follow Tesla's moves to slash $2,000 off the prices of three of its five models in the United States late Friday. That's the latest evidence of the challenges facing the electric vehicle maker.

4. Delta Air Lines, facing another union attempt to organize flight attendants, is raising their pay

Delta Air Lines, the most profitable U.S. carrier, is raising pay for nonunion employees as it gets ready for another attempt by a union to represent its flights attendants.

CEO Ed Bastian told Delta employees Monday that the airline will boost pay for flight attendants and ground workers by 5%, raise the minimum wage for U.S. workers to $19 per hour, and set aside money for merit raises. Delta said the increases affect more than 80,000 employees.
