Good evening, Texas. We're wrapping up the day for you with the most important stories you need to know and your weather outlook.

Your Weather Planner

Extremely hot temperatures will remain entrenched across Texas for the foreseeable future as high pressure remains close enough to the state to keep the triple-digits in the forecast.

The high will move west this weekend allowing for a very week cold front to slip into the state. Temperatures will be about 10 degrees cooler in DFW on Saturday but still look for mid to upper 90s. As for the rest of us, the front won't bring any relief to the scorching heat.

We have included a very slim 20% chance of a scattered sprinkle from DFW to Austin to San Antonio but if you want my honest opinion, that's about 15% too high. Most of us will remain sunny and dry.

Today's Big Stories

1. 12 migrants located in stolen 18-wheeler near San Antonio

Police say a man is in custody after 12 migrants were discovered hidden in a tanker truck Wednesday night near San Antonio.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, a Von Ormy deputy noticed the 18-wheeler on Interstate 35, southwest of San Antonio, before 11 p.m. The deputy ran the plate and it came back stolen.

A short chase ensued, and police were then able to pull the vehicle over. The driver, a man, was armed, but police took him into custody. It’s believed the truck was coming from Laredo.

2. U.S.: North Korea hasn't responded to attempts to discuss American soldier who ran across border

North Korea hasn't responded to U.S. attempts to discuss the American soldier who bolted across the heavily armed border, officials in Washington said Thursday, underscoring that the serviceman's prospects for a quick release are unclear at a time of high tensions and inactive communication channels.

Without mentioning the soldier, North Korea's defense minister instead issued a veiled threat Thursday, suggesting that the docking of a nuclear-armed U.S. submarine in South Korea could be grounds for a nuclear attack by the North. North Korea has used such rhetoric before, but the latest threat could signal just how strained ties are right now.

Pvt. Travis King, who was supposed to be on his way to Fort Bliss, Texas, after finishing a prison sentence in South Korea for assault, ran into North Korea while on a civilian tour of the border village of Panmunjom on Tuesday. He is the first known American held in North Korea in nearly five years.

3. Police cast doubt on Alabama woman's kidnapping claim after reporting toddler on highway

Authorities in Alabama cast doubt Wednesday on the story of a woman who set off a frantic search when she disappeared for two days after calling 911 to report a toddler wandering on the highway. Carlee Russell told investigators she was abducted and forced into a car Thursday, but they have been unable to verify her account, police said.

The 25-year-old's return home Saturday prompted intense speculation about where she had been and what had happened to her. Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis cast doubt on that account at a news conference, saying detectives were still investigating her whereabouts, but had so far been “unable to verify most of Carlee's initial statement.”

4. Democrats accuse GOP of breaking House rules with RFK Jr. testimony

A House subcommittee hearing Thursday on censorship quickly grew heated as Democrats attacked Republican lawmakers for giving Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a public platform just days after he floated a baseless conspiracy theory that COVID-19 is “ethnically targeted” to disproportionately attack white and Black people while Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people are most immune.

Just after Kennedy gave his opening remarks, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., argued Kennedy’s appearance violated House rules against allowing testimony that “may tend to defame, degrade, or incriminate any person.” She called for a vote to bring the meeting into executive session for further discussion.
