TAMPA, Fla. — One of the most common jobs in the United States is truck driving.
With so many trucks on the road, drivers need places to park.
Darrin Roth, with the American Trucking Associations, said 98% of drivers have issues finding parking.
"There are surveys conducted every year, and the lack of truck parking is always either the number one or number two issue for truck drivers," Roth said. "So this is a huge priority for them," he said.
Roth said this is an issue nationwide, including in Tampa Bay.
That's why he wants to see the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act passed through Congress.
The legislation would provide $755 million dedicated to improving parking for truck drivers.
For Joshua Douglas, the Director of Education at the Tampa Truck Driving School, one of the biggest roadblocks for drivers locally is finding a place to park their trucks.
"Locally, especially in Tampa, there's zero parking," he said.
With little parking to choose from, Douglas said drivers sometimes have to park miles away from their homes.
When they do find parking, he said it can cost drivers between $10-$40 a day.
"It's really hard on these truckers," he said. "They go out, they spend time away from their families, they're making a good living and then they come home and they have to spend a good chunk of their pay just to be able to park their truck."
Supporters of the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act said they want to get this funding in the next major transportation bill.
Roth said the deadline is Sept. 30 of next year, or the current one could be extended.
