SAN ANTONIO — Flu season is around the corner and doctors are urging people to get their flu shots as soon as possible.

Health officials are making it easy for everyone to get their flu shot without having to leave the comfort of their vehicles. With fewer people in quarantine in 2021 compared to 2020, experts say the flu shot is more important than ever.

This past Saturday morning, Paul Massey was in line at the Freeman Coliseum with hundreds of others, waiting to get his flu shot.

“I get the flu shot every year,” said Massey.

He makes sure to stay up-to-date on vaccines because of where he works.

“I work in a jail and there’s always a possibility of catching something there,” said Massey.

That’s a chance he’s not willing to take. Massey said when the COVID vaccine was offered, he didn’t waste any time.

“I got the Moderna one on the 11 of January. I’m trying to stay as heathy as possible, if I can anyway,” said Massey.

Director of Pharmacy at University Health Jennifer Rodriguez said Massey is doing the right thing for the community.

“The flu is a very serious virus that you can contract during this winter season. We want to remind people to get their flu shot to prevent any further hospitalizations,” said Rodriguez.

She said it’s not just the winter months when the flu is prevalent, as the virus is already making its rounds.

“We’ve already seen several flu cases come through as early as July. So, it is very important to continue to mask and use hand sanitizer to prevent the spread of the flu,” said Rodriguez.

The volunteers working at this flu shot clinic make it easy to get the shot.

“You could drive up in your pajamas and get your flu vaccine. It’s easy. It's convenient and it’s free,” said Rodriguez.

Massey is aware of vaccine hesitancy, so he makes sure he does everything he can to protect himself.

“With some folks, it is hopeless. They just refuse to get vaccinated for anything,” said Massey.

University Health is holding more of these drive up flu shot clinics around the city. The next dates will be Sept. 25, Oct. 9 and Oct. 16.
