GREENVILLE, Texas — It appears to have been staged and may have been intended as a joke of some description, but a photo that surfaced this week on social media has sparked an investigation in Greenville ISD.

In a communication with Spectrum News 1, the district confirmed a photo that was widely shared on social media depicts a white teacher placing her foot on a Black elementary school student’s neck.

Dallas-area media reports indicate the teacher has been placed on leave while the incident is investigated.

On Wednesday, Greenville ISD superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins sent a message to parents in the district as well as staff members.

“Earlier today, a highly upsetting picture depicting a Black student with a foot on his neck was posted and circulated on social media,” the message reads. “Upon learning about this, we immediately contacted the family to check on the student to ensure his well-being. We will continue to be in touch with the family to be sure the student feels comfortable and safe on campus.”

Liggins described the incident as staged, but what prompted the staging of a photo that immediately brings to mind the murder of George Floyd and numerous other acts of violence wasn’t immediately made clear.

“Our Human Resources Department immediately contacted the employee who staged the picture. We take this situation very seriously. It will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate action will be taken,” the letter continues.

The photo, not surprisingly, sparked outrage in the community.

“We have heard from many community members, and we understand their concern and anger,” Liggins’s letter concludes. “Greenville ISD embraces diversity and believes in the importance of treating all people with respect and dignity.”
