NATIONWIDE – Apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border in March reached the highest number since 2006, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol data published by the Washington Post Friday shows.

Data shows agents took more than 171,000 migrants into custody that month, which is up from 78,442 in January.

In addition, the report shows, Customs and Border patrol agents took in more than 18,800 unaccompanied minors during March, an increase of 99% over February.

The previous one-month high was 11,861 in March of 2019.

This comes as the Biden administration works to get a handle on the number of migrants making their way across the border. Facilities set up in Texas for migrant children, for instance, are at or beyond capacity.

The Biden administration says that it’s working to address the increase in migrants coming to the border. Last week, President Joe Biden tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the White House efforts at the U.S. southern border and work with Central American nations to address root causes of the migration. The government also issued a statement saying it will provide a daily tally of child migrants in custody.
