SAN ANTONIO — The team at Paris Hatters in San Antonio repairs all kinds of hats--and that's just part of what they do there.

Abe Cortez's dad and brother started the business back in 1917.

"People come in, people I know and they're like, 'Hey Abe, how are you?' They look at a hat. 'You want to see a hat? Yeah I want to see a hat,‘“ said Cortez.

Each hat in the store can be custom-fitted.

"We've got a 20X, 50X, 100x,” said Cortez.

The higher the number, the higher quality the hat. One hat in the store is labeled a 1,000x, so it’s pretty fancy.

"That's a $5,500 hat, comes with its own leather case,” he said.

There are thousands of hats to boot; shapes and styles for every head, including some famous ones. In fact, there's an entire wall of celebrities who’ve worn the hats at Paris Hatters.

"Phil Jackson from the Lakers, Dwight Yoakum, Waylon Jennings, Sammy Davis, Junior…” Cortez listed off everyone from princes to popes. “The pope in 1987, I put a hat on him."

One famous face that wasn't so famous at the time, he wanted a hat, too.

"He carried one, and his manager carried two boxes. He got to the door and he said, 'Remember my name: Garth Brooks,’” remembered Cortez. “Six months later, wow, he was big time!”

Even the famous hat wearers are family here, but that includes everyone who comes through the door--easier said than done for some.

“Shaquille O’Neal. He had to duck to come in the doorway. I have a picture with him and I think his head would hit that beam up there. He’s huge!” said Cortez’s daughter.

That’s just a day in the life at Paris Hatters. Not much has changed through the years. They even use an old hand-cranked cash register.

“We’ve been doing this all our lives. We like it,” said Cortez. "You never have a dull moment here. There’s always something going on.”
