TEXAS – While COVID-19 vaccines are not yet available at H-E-B pharmacies, the company is sharing more details on what will happen when they arrive at stores.

In a video posted to social media, H-E-B Pharmacy Senior Director Donna Montemayor, RPh, explains that the company has been working with the CDC and state officials for months in anticipation of distribution.

“And as we being the process of distributing the vaccines, it is important that we continue to wear our masks, wash our hands, and maintain social distance,” says Montemayor.

The company has 1,000 certified immunizers ready to help distribute the vaccine which will be provided to customers free of charge.

Because the shots much be kept at -70°C, Montemayor says special freezers and equipment are already on hand to make sure the vaccines are stored properly.

When they arrive, H-E-B will be following the CDC’s phased rollout guidelines and will first give the vaccines to health care workers and providers, and residents of long-term care facilities.

Phase two will immunize people 65 years and older and essential workers. By Spring 2021, she says they expect to be able to begin vaccinating the general public.

“We are proud to continue our longstanding tradition of taking care of Texans,” says Montemayor.

The first vaccine will be available to anyone 16 years old and above, but vaccines made by other manufacturers may have different age requirements. Montemayor says the company will make sure customers are aware of any additional restrictions.

Pharmacists will work with customers to let them know when they need to return for a second dose sometime 21-28 days after receiving the first dose.
