TEXAS — While the news likely needs to be tempered by lags in reporting data by several Texas counties, Monday’s recording-shattering number of new cases of COVID-19 remains disconcerting.

The Texas Department of State Health Services most recently reported 15,182 new cases of the virus in the state, setting a new record for cases in a single day. It should be noted that the holiday weekend caused some counties to report a few days’ worth of new cases at once, however.

The agency also reported 170 new fatalities attributed to the virus.

The latest numbers bring the total number of cases reported in Texas to 1,184,250, and the total number of deaths attributed to the virus to 21,549.

There are currently an estimated 188,984 activate cases of COVID-19 in the state and an estimated 976,517 recoveries.

A staggering 9,047 people are being treated for the virus in Texas hospitals. However, there are 12,691 hospital beds available in the state and 819 available ICU beds.

Despite the fact that Texas is rapidly approaching 22,000 fatalities associated with the virus, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has indicated no new shutdown orders are forthcoming.
