DALLAS — Families near Dallas are scrambling to find food and shelter after a powerful storm swept through. Officials are now confirming it was an EF2 tornado that hit Arlington in an area that’s about five miles away from the AT&T Stadium where the Dallas Cowboys play.

So far, there are at least 75 families who can’t go home right now, they also have no food as the power was out for hours. Rent is also due in a few days and there are plenty of parents who don’t know how they are going to support their families as we head into the holidays.

The damage and destruction is causing desperation. Many families are all packed up with no place to go.

“It’s bad,” said Antoinette Zachary.

Zachary is one mom of two little ones who is a part of the group that's stressing about finding a place to stay. City of Arlington officials say so far, they are able to count at least two other apartment complexes, some businesses, and homes that were in the middle of the tornadoes path and are ruined.

“We’re just here basically, just winging it. Everybody is outside. Some people slept in their cars last night. It’s not fair,” added Zachary.

Zachary says she’s trying to put on a brave face so her daughters don’t realize the hardship they are in. Faulty power lines prevent the family from going back in to grab the rest of their things.

“They told us not to go back inside our apartment. We’re not allowed to enter them so, at this point, I don’t know what I’m going to do,” she explained.

Zachary says she is tight on cash right now so she is seriously thinking about keeping the money she would use on rent. She says she doesn’t have enough in her bank account to pay rent for a damaged spot she can’t go back to, and pay for a temporary spot at the same time.

“I’m just tired. It’s COVID. I’m just exhausted. I can even really feel anything anymore,” said Zachary.

Zachary and her children were not able to have a traditional Thanksgiving, but if Red Cross is able to come through with beds for her family, that’s one thing Antoinette says she can be thankful for this holiday season.
