SAN SABA, Texas — Harvest time at the Millican Pecan Company means combing acres of trees to find the best pecans.

Winston Millican’s great-great grandfather started growing pecans in San Saba, Texas in the late 1800s. Then, the business started branching out.

"This is what my dad planted back in the ’60s. We call that the ‘Little Orchard,’" said Millican.

Millican is a fifth generation pecan farmer. Kristin Millican joined the ranks when she married Winston Millican and a family steeped in tradition.

"I just think it’s a rare thing to carry on something for so many generations from the late 1800s to 2020, here we are," said Kristen Millican.

Where they are is in a town known as the Pecan Capital of the World. The Millicans brought their business into the 21st Century with a retail shop complete with sweets made by hand and with lots of pecans.

"We are in the final process of tossing the pecans in sugar, you can’t have too much sugar! No! Haha," said Kristen Millican.

The Millicans started the candy side of the business inside a house, but they ran out of room.

"So, the Lord blessed us with this building, and we’ve been here since 2006 and we look forward to seeing how far he’s going to take it," Winston said.

The Millicans are already planning another expansion and trying to pack up orders for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

But no matter how big the business gets, the Milicans remember how it all began--among acres of trees where a love of family and pecans began to grow.
