Lupe Zapata joined Spectrum News in August of 2020.

In addition to reporting distinguished stories, Zapata can also pull off the perfect pirouette. In Texas, Zapata danced competitively and held the title “The Cumbia King”.

Lupe graduated from the University of North Texas where he got his start in journalism anchoring for NTTV Nightly News. While living in Los Angeles, he produced a five-part series called “Tell Me A Story.” As an Uber Driver he interviewed the people he drove and asked them to share stories of love and talk about whatever that meant to them. This candid interviewing style is his favorite.

Zapata’s most meaningful story was his coverage of a homecoming parade for a 10-year-old Fort Stockton boy battling stage-5 cancer. At this rally, local ministers prayed over the boy and his family. Local groups presented them with gifts and thousands of dollars in donations to send them on a beach trip Matthew, the boy, had been wanting to take for years.

When Zapata isn’t reporting, you might find him hiking, dancing, or doting over his two nieces.
