The arrest happened on the Interstate-35 turnaround off 8 Street across from police headquarters. Lana Withham says she saw police use excessive force and then re-watched it over and over again after a captured video went viral.
This video shot by community journalist Hiram Gilberto shows protester Jarrid Cornell being taken to the ground by several Austin Police Officers. Cornell was arrested for obstructing a highway, but his arrest didn’t stop him from getting back out to protest. He says the takedown was targeted.
“I’ve been out here for 16 days straight at that point on, so they know me. I’m a target. They know my face, so they came right at me,” said Cornell.
About a week ago, APD announced they would not use knee to neck restraints unless the situation was potentially deadly.
“They tackled him in a very violent way and then on top of that you have the knee on the neck restraint which they already said they didn’t’ do,” said Witham.
According to APD, this incident is under investigation.
“The way they treated me, that’s not why I’m upset, the way they treated me just further solidifies why we’re here. It’s the culture of policing,” said Cornell.
