SAN ANTONIO — Peacefully protesting is what some activists say needs to take place in San Antonio for real sustainable change to take place following the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd.
In response to this weekend’s protests, Antonio Lee became an overnight activist creating the Young Ambitious Activists movement. The group held a peaceful protest Wednesday in front of Public Safety Headquarters and requested that if anyone became unruly that they be pointed out. The group didn't want to see a repeat of Tuesday night's clash with law enforcement at their event.
“We have people starting that problem and it needs to end now. To these officers that are here to protect us, they want us to use our voice, they want to hear what we have to say,” said Antonio Lee.
Also inspired by keeping the peace and creating change is Ervin Lee, unrelated. During this week’s protests, he created The People’s Representation. The newly formed group is dedicated to connecting people and empowering their voice in protest.
“Not only do I not want to be the next George Floyd, but my future kids is what we are doing it for,” said Ervin Lee.
Ervin Lee said he can cannot allow racism to affect every aspect of life anymore and hopes with his efforts people will better understand the black community.
“The N word, it means something different [to me] so it’s beautiful what I’m seeing out here [with these protests],” he said.
As protests continue on, both activists hope their efforts will be the first step to meaningful change.
