SAN ANTONIO -- A homeless camp spanning underground across two cities was just located by Hollywood Park police near Highway 281 and Mecca Drive. Authorities say an increase in crime in the area tipped them off to the tunnel that spans between San Antonio and Hollywood Park.

TXDOT and Hollywood Park officials have been busy cleaning up the massive homeless camp throughout the week.

"It's about a mile back that way, but then it keeps going," said Victor Garza, a subcontractor. "There's little crevices and corners and a living space; it's ugly."

Subcontractors have spent the past few days navigating their way down a steep creek into what was once a homeless camp inside a network of underground tunnels.

"I don't understand how they could live like that to be honest. It's bad," said Garza.

Hollywood Park police say dozens of people may have been living in the network of tunnels that span three miles. Shopping carts, makeshift toilets, and drug paraphernalia were among the debris found.

The contractors say Hollywood Park and TXDOT have cleaned up their portion of the tunnels. Now they're just waiting on the City of San Antonio to clean up what's left beneath its jurisdiction. Hollywood Park police say all of the homeless people that were living underground in the network of tunnels were taken to various homeless networks around the county for assistance.
