TEXAS – The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles was not among the businesses that reopened Friday as part of Gov. Greg Abbott’s phased approach to reopening the Texas economy.
That means drivers who haven’t renewed their vehicle registration, titling, or disabled parking placards are still off the hook.
Back in March when Gov. Abbott issued the state of disaster proclamation for all Texas counties, one of the things that was included was temporarily waiving certain vehicle requirements.
Some of the items being waived include:
- Vehicle registrations
- Vehicle titling
- Disabled parking placards
- 30-day temporary permits
So far, the department website says it is still filling online requests like registration renewals and sticker requests.
The reason the department was included in the governor’s proclamation was to try and prevent drivers from having to enter county tax assessor-collector office in-person, thereby preventing the spread of COVID-19/coronavirus.
When do drivers have to file by?
As of now that remains to be seen. Drivers are being given a 60-day period after TxDMV notifies the public that normal operations have resumed.
Since we don’t know yet when those operations will start back up, Texas drivers that need to renew can continue to wait for further instructions from the state.
