SAN ANTONIO — The Battle of the Flowers parade may have been postponed until November 13, 2020, but the spirit of the annual experience is still alive and well across communities in San Antonio.

For residents living at the Heights on Huebner nursing home, isolation from their beloved family members has been tough. Proactive measures preventing residents from coming into physical contact with family went into effect on March 12. For six weeks and counting, physical contact has been very limited.

To cheer up some of the residents who were feeling down, families and staff came together to put on a drive-by Battle of the Flowers parade. For the Pala family, it was a chance to celebrate 101 years of life and fiesta.
"It's hard because you want to be next to them and hold them, and do what you always do. Go have dinner with them. Lauren plays checkers with my mom," said parade participant Tony Pala. "She's 101, and you do the best you can. She's doing well. She's well taken care of with a lot of love."

In lieu of the normal Battle of Flowers parade, cars were decked out in colorful flowers, and of course piñatas, all in hopes to brighten the spirits of those stuck in isolation from family.
"Since they're not out in the community, we're trying to bring a little bit of the community to them," said Ana Pala.
