International relations specialist Jennifer Richmond is a firm believer in the power of writing letters.

Richmond has started pen-pal programs in the past between school children in the U.S. and Vietnam.

Now, she's hoping to connect local students and senior citizens through letters during the coronavirus epidemic.

"Of course in our social media era we can connect so much quicker, but the time that it takes to write a letter really shows importance. And actually, letters are something that you can touch and they become memories that we can re-imagine," Richmond said.

In addition to making a connection, Richmond believes the pen-pal program helps kids with handwriting, English, and even history. Seniors can learn about today's youth, for instance.
