SAN ANTONIO – The largest MLK march in the country is in San Antonio, Texas, and it takes a lot of preparation ahead of time to make it happen.

  • March is Monday, January 20
  • Preparation begins months ahead of time
  • Local sorority participates every year

One organization that has spent the last several months preparing are the members of the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Tau Omega chapter.

A week before the event, members made sure tents that are places at the end of the end of the march were ready.

Lorna Stafford, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, says there are many reasons why the sorority has participated in the event since the San Antonio march first began 33 years ago.

“One of the main reasons to honor Dr. Martin Luther King for everything that he's done, for this country, for this world,” said Stafford. “This is our opportunity not only to honor the work of Dr. King, but also to honor the work and support of our sorority sister Coretta Scott King. She was just as instrumental in the civil rights movement as her husband was— it's our way of honoring. Honoring and paying back.”

San Antonio’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March is scheduled for Monday, January 20, 2020. The march begins at 10 a.m. at MLK Academy on 3501 MLK Drive.
