SAN ANTONIO -- “Honeymoon in Pandale” was shot on location west of the Pecos in West Texas, near the ghost town with the same name as the one-hour movie.

  • "Honeymoon in Pandale" to premiere January 5 at Sam's Burger Joint
  • Shot in West Texas
  • Is musician/filmmaker Kosub's second cinematic effort

I first met the always energetic and fast-talking artist at the Spectrum News San Antonio studios a little more than a week ago. The quick-humored cowboy and hat-wearing native Texan was more than eager to share the news of the “Honeymoon in Pandale” release.

Station security cameras gave me the first glimpse of the constantly entertaining musician/filmmaker/actor.

Assignments Editor Joanna Benavidez paused to answer the door, unsure of the unannounced guest at the door. It’s not unusual for less than scrupulous folks to make a surprise visit to TV stations.

Through the talkback I asked the friendly-enough looking fellow what I could do for him.

“I have film I shot and edited and will have a premiere at Sam’s Burger Joint next month,” Kosub said. “And Augie Meyers is in the film, too!”

When I heard the name of the Grammy Award-winning Texas music legend I knew I had a helluva story waiting delivered to the front door.

“A year ago, in September, my movie producer Richard Dugger took me to a place called Pandale,” Kosub said, speaking of the place he chose to make the film, “which is 26 miles of Judge Roy Bean in Langtry on the beautiful Pecos River. And I went to the bridge and said if John Ford the director was alive today, he would shoot a movie. John Ford is basically who made John Wayne.”

After a lengthy and somewhat successful run at making and selling records, the fast-talker laid out why he’s now trying his creative luck on the big screen.

“My friend Richard is at my house once, and I said, ‘You know, I’m happy. I have 27 albums out. Many of which are Grammy winners. Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, Flaco. I told Richard, I said, ‘I’ve got me a hot red convertible, I’ve got a swimming pool, I have an electric gate. There’s one I haven’t done. I’ve always wanted to make a movie. ‘Go ahead and make a movie,’ he said, ‘my son William has a camera.’  I called him back in 48 hours: ’So okay, I’ve written a movie!’

It’s up to you to decide if the ambitious artist has what it takes for his following career act.

“Honeymoon in Pandale” premiers in two weeks, Sunday January 5, at Sam’s Burger Joint. The aspiring filmmaker ’s band, Kevin Kosub and the Blacktears, will headline the evening. Grammy-winning Texas music legend Augie Meyers does make a cameo in the film.

Even if Kosub’s movie never finds itself at SXSW, Sundance, or the New York Film Festival, I’m glad I opened the door to read his handwritten press release.
