SAN ANTONIO - As any pet parent knows, getting a perfect snapshot of your pup can be pretty tricky.

During the holidays especially, most pet owners love to take pictures of their pets for the holiday cards or social media.

We asked one Texas photographer to break down her tricks and to share why she loves capturing special moments.

Wendy Vance owns Puppy Breath Photography and can often be found volunteering by taking photos of adoptable dogs at animal shelters.

"I went to the Art Institute when I retired from the Air Force and got a degree in photography and decided to use it to help the shelter then start a pet photography business," she said.

Her pictures have gotten her a lot of business- she and her assistant Tabitha stay pretty busy driving between shelters and the studio.

"The most fulfilling photoshoots have been the end of life photoshoots. There was a moment and I was like 'This is my purpose.' I don't want to do quick shoots. I want to do purposeful photography," Vance said.

Even in her own home studio, you can see her purpose through photos of her own rescue pets.

She says for pet owners, there are things you can do to capture priceless moments.

  • Walk your dogs before picture time, get them tired
  • Make noises to get their attention but don’t overuse one specific noise
  • Try not to give them too many commands
  • Praise them with toys and treats

She also suggests being ready to move around a lot, go outside if you can, and don't rush the process.

"This is my love. This is what brings me joy," she said.
