SAN ANTONIO —Daniel Fitzgerald has a reason to love tennis.

“My grandfather taught me when I was like 11, and I really love the sport and playing because it’s part of my family,” said Fitzgerald.

This year it’s all about family on the court. Fitzgerald is a senior at O’Connor and his brother is now a freshman. Not only can they play on the boys tennis team together, they are doubles partners.

“We do have good chemistry and it’s a different environment from being at home and in tennis,” Fitzgerald said. “It helps us bond in a different way.”

Off the court, Fitzgerald is an outstanding student. He holds a GPA of 103 and scored a 1460 on his SAT.

“When I get home after playing tennis, I got to get to work and finish stuff,” said Fitzgerald. “Time management and prioritizing are a big part of it.”

His time management is pretty unique. Fitzgerald finds time to be the president of Mu Alpha Theta, the vice president of the National Honor Society and has been in the Scouts for much of his life. His biggest endeavor came with his eagle project, where he organized a group to build a new path between buildings at Helotes Hills United Methodist Church.

“I got a lot of volunteers from O’Connor and through NHS and volunteers from my troop and funds for the project,” said Fitzgerald. We took a day, dug out land and built a granite pathway.”

Fitzgerald plans to study chemical engineering in college but says he also has an interest in the medical field.
