TEXAS -- Once those Thanksgiving meals have settled and your relatives have made their way back home, it’s time to head to the stores and take advantage of Black Friday deals.

However, it turns out vying for those must-have gifts could pose a health risk. In fact, the doctors at Baptist Medical Center are urging shoppers to keep that in mind.

Doctors say deadly heart attacks increase during the winter months. That’s attributed to increased stress levels associated with preparation for the holidays and gift shopping.

Stress can lead to hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and even ulcers. Symptoms include chest discomfort, shortness of breath and fainting.

If you experience any of those symptoms, doctors urge you to alert someone immediately.

“Take time to let a family member know as well as if there is a facility with a phone number, call 911 for assistance or someone in the health department,” Dr. Nnenna Ejesieme with Baptist Medical Center said. “Usually at the malls and shopping centers they have someone that is in nursing or someone to assist with those events.”

If you’re feeling seriously ill, do not wait to visit the ER.
