SAN ANTONIO - When you step into RD Speakeasy, you're greeted with smokey cocktails and tunes of the 1920s.

  • Located inside the Barn Door Restaurant
  • Idea brewed from owners Randy Stokes and Darcie Schipull
  • Bar top has historical moments attached to it

It's a unique experience for San Antonio, but where you can find it, makes it extra special.

Randy Stokes and his family own the iconic Barn Door Restaurant. He’s always on the move.

“Isn’t it crazy how the Barn Door has evolved?" said Stokes.

It’s come a long way since 1953. Moving forward, Stokes had an idea to step back in time.

You’d never really go outside and around the Barn Door, until now.

“So now, in coming to the back of the Barn Door, you’ll see the green light. Knock a few times and give a password," said Stokes.

And just like that, you’re in. You'll take in food, dark lights, craft cocktails, candles, music of the 1920s, and even a bar Babe Ruth and several U.S. presidents hung out at.

As San Antonio’s cocktail scene continues to flourish, Stokes and his wife Darcie Schipull knew theirs would have to be special.

“We wanted to differentiate ourselves by having a password and reservation only. So nobody in San Antonio is doing that part of it," Stokes said.

It’s an alluring atmosphere, and one that’s catching on for people who know how to get in anyway. Only 27 people at a time can kick back.

To get in, you need to text a number, make a reservation, and receive the night’s password.

So far, guests have not only been enjoying the food and drinks, but the atmosphere. There are surprises around every corner, even for the most loyal Barn Door fans. Take, for example, the way a one-way mirror frames the room.

“It’s pretty neat to sit in here knowing they can’t see us. It’s that total experience. So it’s a mirror on the other side so people fix their hair all the time and do all kinds of crazy stuff," he said.

“This seemed like a neat opportunity to do something a little different," said Schipull.

A secret spot, a love of cocktails, and a celebration of the 1920s as we step into 2020.
