SAN ANTONIO — The Cortez family has been feeding San Antonio for more than 75 years and the new restaurant they are opening is dedicated to the husband and wife that help start the beloved La Familia Cortez Restaurant chain.
- New restaurant opens Tuesday
- Dedicated to Cortez family matriarch
“Mi familia es su familia!” That's the motto behind Mi Familia de Mi Tierra, the newest restaurant in The Rim Shopping Center, set to open Tuesday.
The term "familia" has always been important to the Cortez family. They say this new restaurant will be dedicated to Cruz and Pedro Cortez, the couple that helped create the original La Familia.
"The reality for us is that this restaurant is to honor them. We did lose my grandma this year and we know she is together with my grandpa in heaven but this has been a family effort," said Pete Cortez, the grandson of Cruz and Pedro Cortez.
The first restaurant in the now famous San Antonio chain opened in 1941 as a three-table café, according to their website. Since then, it has grown to multiple restaurants, all created and operated by four generations of the Cortez family.
The new addition is the chain's first full-service venture outside of Market Square.
Mi Familia will be open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. One highlight of the restaurant is it is covered in hundreds of family photos going back four generations.
