SAN ANTONIO --Downtown San Antonio is rapidly transforming as the city continues forward into its 21st century renaissance period.
- Tony's Bar in downtown San Antonio to close December 13
- Has been operating for 20 years
- Property will be purchased and refurbished
Cranes construct a different skyline. Workers pave new roadways, sidewalks and public spaces. Newly built condos lure millennials to the urban core. With those changes comes the end to one of downtown’s favorite dive bars.
“I’m not really calling it quits," says Tony Lopez, owner of Tony’s bar, “I’ll just move on to other things.”
The old-school Tejano watering hole soon will be no more.
After a solid 20-year run on Brooklyn Street, just east of Broadway, the dark, quaint, and almost hidden gem will shut down the second week of December.
Tony’s Bar is one of those places where time seems to stand still. The evidence of that can be found in hand painted signs and sayings inside and out of the family friendly pub. On the wall to the left of where Lopez serves the paying customer a well-chilled beer you will find a coin-operated pay phone. Lopez claims it still works. This reporter didn’t have any quarters to try make a call. To add greater ambiance to the gritty-looking place you'll find a juke box not operated through an app. At Tony’s, you’ll need a good old-fashioned George Washington dollar bill to play your favorite classics.
Lopez will lease the property to new business owners who will make the old spot bright and shiny with upgrades expected from the next generation of patrons.
Tony’s Bar is expected to close down on December 13.
