WACO, Texas -- A Waco-area elementary school student has died after contracting a brain-eating amoeba.

Officials say Lily Avant, 10, swam in the Brazos River over the Labor Day weekend.

She came down with a headache and fever almost a week later. Avant was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth.

The Texas Department of State Health Services said this type of amoeba is typically found in freshwater bodies like ponds, lakes and rivers.
