SAN ANTONIO -- You may want to check your pockets for some loose change because here's a new quarter in circulation featuring the San Antonio Missions.

  • United States Mint released the new coin
  • 12-year initiative that continues through 2021
  • Features the San Antonio River

The United States Mint released the 49th America the Beautiful Quarter Thursday morning.

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program honors 56 national parks and sites. It's a 12-year initiative that continues through 2021.

The design on the tails side shows wheat, arches and a bell, a lion and the San Antonio River to pay tribute to the missions.

At the big reveal kids were able to pocket 25 cents of history.

"I hope they keep it," said Mardi Arce of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. "But even if they don't keep it, I hope that what they do is look at quarters from now on."

"Every time you have change in your pocket, take a look at those quarters because it might be the San Antonio history lesson that you get but it also might be Lowell National Historic Park in Massachusetts," said Arce.

The San Antonio quarter is one of five to be released this year.

The others dinclude Lowell National Historic Park, American Memorial Park in the the northern Mariana Islands, War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Gaum and the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho.
