SAN ANTONIO - Joel Guera is a former cartoonist, with a background in graphic design, and created trading cards that double as learning tools.

  • Created Buzu Trading Cards
  • Kids create the design on the cards
  • Portion of profit goes to charity

Guera is the creator of Buzu Trading Cards. Kids draw the characters, and Guera renders them professionally. The cards he makes are based off of STAAR test questions, and have had a significant effect on student behavior.

They also give card creators a chance to give back. Children can sell their rendered cards and a portion of the profits go to children in need.

Creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking are just a few positive things Guera's witnessed first hand at his school, Locke Hill Elementary.

"Once a week a child gets their card picked, and the best part is when you give it to them, you see a kid you know, they lose control of their hands, they're almost flying away," said Guera.  "That aspect of sharing, getting them involved, validating them is supremely important."

The cards have been incredibly successful within the walls of the school, but he's got bigger plans in mind.

"Long term goals is just that. The convention model. We've got kids all coming in with their own custom Buzu cards just to have fun," said Guera.
