SAN ANTONIO -- VIA Metropolitan Transit’s first of its kind rideshare service in the Bexar County region has surpassed another major milestone in northeast San Antonio.

  • Launched May 4
  • Has served 20,000 passengers
  • Will fully replace 3 routes in Northeast zone

As of August 15, the agency’s new transit option, VIA Link, has served more than 20,000 passengers within its first three months of operation.

The on-demand service launched May 4, and it’s already proving to be an increasingly popular way to get around San Antonio’s Northeast Side. Due to its successful pilot launch, VIA officials informed Spectrum News the rideshare service will fully replace all three bus routes in the Northeast Zone beginning Monday, August 19.

By replacing these routes, passengers will have broader access to any destination in the Northeast Zone without making frequent stops along the way.

VIA Link is a service similar to Uber and Lyft. Passengers use a mobile app to request a ride, and within minutes, they’re picked up by a certified driver and dropped off at any location in northeast San Antonio. If commuters need to travel outside of the Northeast Zone, VIA Link riders can be dropped off at the Naco Pass Transfer Point and connect their trip along any of VIA’s 96 bus routes.

As an extension of VIA’s bus service, the cost to ride with VIA Link is the same price as VIA’s bus fare: $1.30 per trip and $0.15 to transfer. VIA bus passes and reduced fares remain valid with VIA Link, and passengers can share their trip with up to four other people.

The new service is part of VIA’s latest effort towards providing modernized transit options. The initiative, called “Via Reimagined,” is structured around mobility innovation and smarter travel. The overall goal is to provide more transit choices, better reliability, utilize advanced technology, contribute to economic growth and improve air quality and overall health in Bexar County.
