SAN ANTONIO – Palo Alto College, part of Alamo Colleges, will be opening a new educational facility about 10 miles from its main campus on San Antonio's South Side.

  • Land donated by Southside ISD

On Thursday, the college held a public information meeting seeking input from area businesses and community leaders on how they want the Southside Education and Training Center to be used.

People that came out said they want the facility to be used for a variety of things ranging from a recreation center to a library.

College officials hope to attract 1,000 new students to the new building.

"We’re in an area where we know that there’s a low educational attainment rate and low literacy rates, so we want to be there for the community to build that foundation whether it’s getting your high school diploma and moving on to that certificate program or transfer to that four-year institution," said Palo Alto College President Robert Garza.

Land donated by Southside ISD will be utilized for the new building that's expected to open in the next two years. The building will be located behind Losoya Middle School.
