SAN ANTONIO — Northside ISD Board of Trustees proposed and unanimously approved a general salary increase of four percent for teachers, administrators and support staff.
- Will raise pay 4%
- Teachers will make a minimum of $55,000
- Will cost the district $34 million
The proposed salary increases would go into effect for this upcoming 2019-2020 school year.
The raise increase comes after the districts teacher union, Northside American Federation of Teachers, asked the district to come up with a compensation plan back in May. Northside ISD was only one of a few districts in the area who hadn't come up with a new compensation plan since House Bill 3 passed earlier this year.
Northside ISD is the fourth largest school district in the state. School districts nearby have already told teachers they will be receiving wage increases ranging from 3.5 to 6 percent for the upcoming school year.
According to the new compensation plan proposed Wednesday night, starting new teacher salaries would also go up just under $2,000 to put the new minimum teachers would make at over $55,000.
One engineer teacher says the 4 percent raise will not help help hire and retain teachers, but also keep them focused on the students and not their pocket book.
"One thing that I'm hoping to see is that some of our teachers don't have to really work that second job you know to make their ends meet," Tracy Jordan said. "They might spend a little more time with their family."
The total cost for the salary increases is expected to cost the district just under $34 million.
Over the past five years the average compensation proposal year-to-year has been a 2.4 percent increase.
