SAN ANTONIO -- The loud noises and big bangs that come with the Fourth of July scare many dogs away from home, and that means extra work for animal rescue organizations like Hand Me Down Hounds.

  • Fireworks cause dogs to run away
  • Organization works to send dogs out of Texas

Lauren Barrios is the executive director of the rescue and said the goal is simple.

"Our mission is to get as many dogs out of Texas as we possibly can. When we send them up north they're in less populated areas." – Executive Director Lauren Barrios.

But in order to do that the dogs need to be healthy, and that takes time. But with the city shelter almost constantly full and especially overrun after the holiday, foster families are essential. Kayla Lackey is a vet tech but also a foster, and loves it.

"It's extremely rewarding. And then also, the dogs we send up north, we get their adoption pictures.  So, although they might not live with us, they're still living the best life,” said Lackey.

According to the most recent census, San Antonio had a total of 200,000 stray animals for the year.
