SCHERTZ, Texas – Several city fire departments came to aid a hotel fire in Schertz Saturday night.

  • Fire happened at the La Quinta Inn and Suites
  • Crews discovered smoke coming from the fourth floor
  • Winds continued to reignite the fire

According to Schertz Fire Rescue, they responded to a fire at the La Quinta Inn and Suites in the 17600 block of Four Oaks Lane around 8:52 p.m.

Upon arrival, crews discovered smoke coming from the fourth floor of the building.

First responders and hotel staff evacuated the building immediately and additional resources were requested.

Wind continued to reignite the fire and flames were not fully extinguished until 2:45 a.m. The building suffered extensive water damage to the lower floors and fire/smoke damage to the fourth floor and attic.

There were 146 people evacuated from the hotel and they were sent to other hotels throughout the area.

"As I got closer I literally saw that it was cordoned off, so I continued past the hotel. That's when I saw the building was lit. Everything was inundated from the very top floor to the second floor," La Quinta Inn and Suites guest Jorge Martinez said.

Three injuries were reported and all have been treated and released. A dog was found on the third floor that was not moving, but because of the efforts of Schertz EMS and Animal Control, the dog is expected to make a full recovery.

Aid was provided by Cibolo, Selma, San Antonio, Live Oak, Bracken, Universal City, New Braunfels, and Randolph fire departments. St. Hedwig and New Berlin fire departments also assisted by backfilling Schertz Fire Stations while all crews responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
