AUSTIN, Texas -- You might call him a miracle dog. He was hit in the head, causing a major skull injury, but somehow he pulled through and has recovered.
- "Captain America" struck with bat or hammer
- Needed 3 surgeries
- Looking for forever home
Captain America, as he’s known, was brought into the San Antonio Animal Shelter as a stray. It took the help of an Austin rescue, several months and surgeries to get Captain American fully back up on his paws again.
Captain America spends his days playing with his best friend, Payne. He’s been staying with his foster mom, Kickie D’Alfonso, since March.
“There was just something about him that just got your heart. He just grabbed you and just melted into you every time you handled him,” D’Alfonso said.
The pup wasn’t always playful. A few months back he was in a great deal of pain. It was initially thought he had a bullet wound in his head.
“His skull was split and there were portions of the skull that were missing and they were concerned about the viability of being able to treat him,” D’Alfonso said.
Judging by fragment found in his skull, a veterinarian believes the dog was hit over the head with a hammer or a bat.
“Surprisingly enough, he never showed me that he was giving up,” D’Alfonso said. “He always gave me that ‘I’m still in it’ type of look and attitude.”
Three surgeries and months later Captain America is thriving and has a love for people despite what happened to him. All he needs now is a forever family.
“It’s really great to see him come back to life and be part of that journey and then know that they are going to go on to give another family all of the happiness and joy that they’ve given us and plus more,” D’Alfonso said.
