SAN ANTONIO -- Kids are wrapping up the school year, and with it definitely feeling like summer outside San Antonio students got a chance to cool off Tuesday afternoon.

San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood has been mentoring the kids at Douglass Elementary School all year long. Tuesday, he surprised the class with a first hand look at their fire fighting equipment like trucks and gear.

They even got a chance to spray kids with water.

"We're so busy with the day-to-day as far as going out protecting the public that for these crews that have a few minutes to come out here and interact with kids, play with water, there could be nothing better," Hood said. "So yeah, it's an exciting time for us. We love coming out for this."

Hood says he adopted Douglas Elementary 10 years ago to help take some kids under his and the department's wing.

Douglass and other SAISD schools let out for summer break Wednesday.
